During May 1915,  German U-boats began making an appearance in the eastern Mediterranean threatening the allied fleet at Gallipoli. Many of the ships in the crowded waters around both Helles and Anzac Cove were sent back to Mudros on the island of Lemnos and the British GHQ, up to that time aboard the transport Arcadian, moved to the island of Imbros, 18 miles away. But some ships had to remain to provide the much needed artillery support to the troops ashore and on 25th May, 1915, the battleship, HMS Triumph was torpedoed whilst off the coast of Anzac and sank within 20 minutes. Fortunately only 78 lives were lost thanks to the skilful handling of the escorting destroyer, HMS Chelmer and other ships which managed to get most of the crew off the ship

Then, two days later another battleship, HMS Majestic, met the same fate just off the coast at W Beach, Helles. Again the loss of life was small, 49 of her crew were killed or drowned,  but it was a significant victory for the Turkish Army who were freed from the continuous menace of heavy naval guns.
